HOOLIHAN, Pearl Matilda (nee Goodfellow)

July 22, 1926 – April 11, 2015

Pearl Hoolihan passed away peacefully at Mayfair Long Term Care Facility on April 11, 2015 at the age of 88 years.  Pearl, daughter of the late William and Matilda Goodfellow (nee Breimon), was born in Kinistino, Saskatchewan, eighth child in a family of six sisters and two brothers. In this small farming community her dad ran the Kinistino Livery Stable and her mother was a custom seamstress. Following her sisters to Calgary, Pearl started her working career at the CPR wiping down steam locomotives.  She later became a telephone operator and then a supervisor at Alberta Government Telephones (AGT), a career for over thirty years.  Pearl was close to her sisters.  Many afternoons were spent joining, one or all of them, for coffee at the No. 1 Legion Calgary Branch.  They were also familiar faces for the Friday and Saturday evening dances. In her early twenties, Pearl was introduced, by one of her sisters, to Jim Hoolihan.  They married and enjoyed each other’s company for twenty four years, raising an only child, Cindy Judd.  After Jim’s passing in 1974, still a young woman in her mid 40’s, she met and became the companion of Joe Leblanc.  During their two decades together Pearl and Joe enjoyed camping and travelling, including her first airplane ride over the ocean to visit Korea, for a Korean War veterans’ pilgrimage. Pearl was recently predeceased by her sister Joyce Bennett on December 24, 2014.   She was also predeceased by her husband Jim, companion Joe, sisters Florence, Ruby, Mildred & Yvonne and brothers Bill & Fred.  Pearl is survived by her daughter, Cindy Judd, and several nieces and nephews. The family thanks her caregiver and friend for over a decade, Irena Rozmiarek of Bayshore Health, as without her assistance Pearl would not have maintained her independence.  We also thank Lynn, Ginny and Leona of Care to Share for their companionship during her time at the hospitals this past year.  Thank you to Dr. Hunter, Roxanne, Celerina and the staff of Mayfair for their kindness and compassion this last short while. A Funeral Service was held at South Calgary Funeral Centre, Calgary, Alberta on April 14, 2015.   Pearl was laid to rest at Queen’s Park Cemetery in Caglary.  Memorial donations may be made directly to the Alzheimer’s Society of Calgary, #201, 222 – 58 Avenue SW, Calgary, AB T2H 2S3, or to a charity of your choice. Messages of remembrance may be left for the family at www.southcalgaryfuneralcentre.ca.

LANGFORD, Frederick Folden

October 19, 1942 - April 20, 2015

With sadness we announce the sudden passing of Fred, age 72 at Foothills Hospital. Fred was born in Drumheller where he lived all his life. He was the oldest child of Roland and Telma Langford. He worked as a bricklayer, first with his father, uncles Leonard and Bud, and brothers Larry and Ross. When his father retired, he and Ross established their own business. Many buildings in Drumheller and the surrounding area are a testament to their skill. In 1988 Fred started work in the maintenance department at the Drumheller Penitentiary, until his retirement in 2003. As a young man, Fred enjoyed hunting, then again in later years with his son Roland and brother Ross. After Fred retired he could be found almost daily prowling the grocery stores and comparing prices. If you wanted to know what was on sale where, you had only to ask Fred. Fred lived in Sunshine Lodge the past two years and was very appreciative of the care and kindness shown him as a resident there. He was predeceased by his parents, and brother Larry Folden. He is survived by his daughter Jordanna (Geoff), his granddaughter Havanna, his son Roland, their mother Frankie, his brother Ross (Edie), sister Gaye (Brian), nephews Mitchell and Kalen and niece and nephew Paula Astra and Grant Folden. BURT, Elsie

October 17, 1914 - February 5, 2015

Elsie Burt, age 100, passed away peacefully with family by her side the morning of February 5, 2015 at Pincher Creek Alberta. Elsie was born to Jakob and Maria (Mary) Haag at Dennewitz, Bessarabia. Her mother, widowed after Elsie’s birth, later married John Delker.  In July 1927 their family of 5 children moved from Gnadenfeld, Bessarabia to Canada to take over a homesteaded farm east of Scapa (Garden Plains). Times were hard during the 30’s and Elsie helped out with the farm chores and milked 6 cows before school. She drove a horse and buggy to school or rode a horse in bad weather. After schooling, Elsie worked off the farm to help support the family, first at the Scapa Store and later at the Hanna Hospital. Elsie married Earl Burt on August 25, 1942 in Hanna while he was on 10-day leave from the army. Earl left immediately to serve three and a half years overseas while Elsie continued work at the hospital until his safe return. In spring of 1946, Earl, Elsie and daughter Sheila moved to the Borel farm six miles north of Craigmyle. This was to be their home for the next 58 years and soon Garry and Diane completed their family. Elsie was a hard working farm wife and mother. She raised chickens and turkeys, sold eggs and cream, picked berries, hoed potatoes, checked cows, helped with the harvest and cared for their beautiful farmhouse and farmyard. She tended four large gardens with fruits, vegetables and flowers and often gave away as much as she kept. She was a wonderful cook and baker and the cookie jar (and candy dish) was always full. Elsie was also a dedicated community worker being a faithful member of the Princeton Ladies Club and a lifetime member of the United Church Women.  She could always be counted on to bring lunch or help in any way. Elsie enjoyed the company and friendship of their neighbors over the years with many cups of coffee and good meals served at the kitchen table. Family gatherings at the farm were memorable and Elsie and Earl were also so proud to attend baptisms, confirmations, birthdays, graduations and other family celebrations.  Elsie always had a card or small gift for any occasion of best wishes for family or friends. After Earl’s passing in 2004, Elsie moved to the Hanna Manor for 9 years and then to Pincher Creek to be closer to her daughter. She was blessed with good health and a sound mind over the years and remarkably celebrated her 100th birthday in October 2014. Elsie was hard working, generous and independent person and always very much a lady. She faced much adversity and loss in her lifetime but carried on with strength, determination and her faith in the Lord. She appreciated nature, birds and animals and observed the changing skies, weather and seasons. The farm was always “home” to her. She valued her friendships and enjoyed visiting with everyone. She loved us all dearly and gave us a good home and upbringing, leaving wonderful memories of our mother and grandmother. We are now grateful for her eternal rest and reunion with those that have passed on before her.  Elsie is lovingly remembered by son Garry Burt (Maria) and children Aaron (Sarah) and their daughter Nadia, Zachary, Christopher, Matthew and Shannon (Dan) Allison and their children Tommy and Ava; daughter Diane Burt Stuckey (Dale) and their children Josh and Katie; sister Mae Weich; granddaughter Carmen (Gary) Schneider and their children Barrett, Carissa and Brandon; granddaughter Carrie (Trevor) Georgsen and their children Riley (Samantha), Tanner and Parker; sister-in-law Violet Delker and brother-in- law Bill Burt. She will also be fondly remembered by her extended family of nieces and nephews and friends and neighbors from the Hanna and Drumheller area. Elsie was predeceased by her mother Mary Delker, father Jakob Haag, step-father John Delker, husband Reinhold Quashnick, husband Earl Burt, daughter Sheila and son-in-law Reid Jorgensen; brothers John, Albert, Alfred and infant sister Annie Delker; grandson Kevin Jorgensen; infant grandson and granddaughter Daniel and Julia Stuckey and many other loved family and friends.  A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held Saturday, May 9, 2015 at the Craigmyle Historic Church at 2:00 pm with Reverend Leila Currie officiating. If friends so desire, memorial donations can be made to the Craigmyle Historic Society at Site 1B-3: Box 14 Craigmyle T0J 0T0 or a charity of their choice.

Kelly is survived by his father Ralph, his brothers Graham, Don, Gary, Jerry (his wife Nancy  and their children Ryan & Jessica) and Kelly’s sister Sandra. He was predeceased by his mother Verna and his brother Douglas. All of us who knew and loved Kelly recognize his zest for living life to the fullest. He loved motorcycle riding, travelling and his job as a mechanic. Kelly was always up for a challenge, an adventure, or a dare. He enjoyed a “lively debate” with friends, family and co-workers. Above all, Kelly was a good person who was deeply loved by his family and friends. At Kelly’s request there will not be a funeral. His quote was “I just want people to party and have a good time when I go.”

JOHANNEPETERS

PETERS, Johanne Lokken

July 30, 1924 - May 22, 2015

Friday, May 22, 2015 was a sad day for those who love Johanne Peters when her life of almost 91 years came to an end.   She was surrounded by family and was ready to leave this earth.

She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Flemming Peters, her children Sharon Mulder (Roy), Colin LaBerge (Jo-Anne), Dixie Gutwald (Dwayne), 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren as well as her older sister Dorthea Christianson and twin sister Martha Wagner (Jack), sisters-in-law Betty Wakeford (Dale) and Ebba Dyck as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Her death was preceded by that of her father Christian Lokken Andersen in 1964, her husband Raymond LaBerge in 1968, her mother Ingeborg Stentebjerg Andersen in 1981 and her son-in-law Mark Gutwald in 2006.

Johanne Lokken Peters (nee Andersen and formerly LaBerge) was the surprise bonus baby delivered after her twin sister Martha on July 30, 1924.  Martha and Johanne were the first twins born at the Wayne, Alberta hospital.

Johanne lived almost all of her life in the Dalum area.  She spent her first years on the farm adjacent to the Blue Spring School. The family moved east to their Dalum farm above East Coulee in 1939. Johanne went to Olds College in 1943 where she took a program for farm wives (from carpentry to first aid to sewing) and moved to Calgary in 1946 where she was a cook at the Tea Kettle Inn.  She married Raymond LaBerge of High River in 1948 and they farmed in that area until 1951 when they moved to the home farm east of Dalum where they raised their family. Sadly Raymond died of cancer in 1968 but Johanne, with farming in her blood, stayed on the farm until a few years before her death.

In 1975 Johanne married Flemming Peters and they farmed together until renting out the land in 1993.  They continued to live on the farm until they moved to their Drumheller condo in 2011.  They had loved farming together and missed living in the country.  Johanne used to drive the grain truck while Flemming drove the combine and he said, “I never had to wait with a full hopper, Jo was always there to unload on the fly which saved precious time…and she still somehow had hot meals ready”. They were a great team as she always knew what needed to be done to help Flemming with the farm work.

Johanne loved gardening, preserving, sewing, knitting & crocheting.  Cooking and baking were her passions and she often said to guests at meal time, “Eat as much as you possibly can”!  She was a member of the Dalum Friendship Club for 64 years (although not active for the last few) and enjoyed the camaraderie.

She cherished the grandchildren and great-grandchildren and as Bestemor, together with Bestefar, enjoyed entertaining and indulging them.  Sometimes grandchildren enjoyed extended visits experiencing farm life and in time there were wonderful visits from great-grandchildren too.

Johanne lived the last 2 ½ years of her life in Drumheller Continuing Care where Flemming visited her every afternoon. Unfortunately she gradually lost her ability to communicate over the last few years but was still cheerful. The family is most grateful to the staff there for the wonderful care she received in spite of how very busy they are.

There will be an open house and celebration of Johanne’s life at the Dalum hall on Sunday, June 7 from 2 to 5 p.m. No flowers or cards please, your thoughts are more than enough.  If you wish, donations can be made to Drumheller Continuing Care.
