Betty Sandulak of Drumheller, Alberta passed away peacefully, after a brief illness on June 21, 2013 at the age of 83 years. Betty’s husband Sam, predeceased her in July of 2010. Betty was born in the small hamlet of Munson at the family home on September 12, 1929. It was here that Betty and her twin brother, Irvin, were introduced to a childhood full of activity and fun with their 7 other siblings. At an early age, Betty learned to love the conversation and fellowship that could be developed over a cup of coffee. Betty kept busy with her family, friends and colleagues. She was always willing to bake a plautz (ObstKuchen), mix up some homemade lemonade or share some of her Easter bread. Betty was a skilled seamstress as many brides and bridesmaids in Drumheller wore a dress that was made in her sewing room. She always had time to repair, remodel or tailor a piece of clothing to meet someone's special requests. Betty was an avid gardener and took special delight in the flowers and vegetables that she planted each spring. Betty influenced many lives in her volunteer work and career as an Educational Assistant in her years at Central Elementary. She also enjoyed her time as a volunteer with the Ladies Auxiliary at the Drumheller Hospital. One of Betty’s favourite weekly activities was Aquasize with the girls, then going out afterwards for pie and coffee. WAKARUK, George
July 13, 1919 -  July 7, 2013

One week before his 94th birthday, George Wakaruk, long- time resident of Newcastle passed away peacefully at the Red Deer Regional Health Complex. He was born in the family home in NewCastle where he lived until his passing. George, his brothers Bill and John (Jake) and sister Helen spent their childhood days in adventures along the banks of the Red Deer River and Newcastle Beach. He had prowess as  a swimmer having the record time for an upstream river swim from the rapids in Newcastle to the Nacmine Bridge. At an early age, George developed a mechanical aptitude, constructing a milk can diving helmet and using a bicycle pump as an air supply successfully crossed the river. This feat was reported in an  article in The Toronto Star newspaper. He also built an airplane utilizing a Model T engine. However, this project was not allowed to get off the ground. In 1946, George met and married Martha Ragon and raised a family of four. He is survived by his wife of  sixty-seven years, Roger of Calgary, Gary of Newcastle, Linda (Tim) Murphy of Bonnyville and Cindy  (Gary) Gerodo of NewCastle.   George had a life- long love of learning. He was an intelligent man being a voracious reader of any literature- from the  humanities to history, politics and particularly the sciences. He prided himself in being  one of the few local boys, at that time, to graduate high school. George had a very strong work ethic. He worked at numerous coal mines in the valley as a miner, fire  boss and mine electrician. In the early 50s, he co-owned and operated the Cozy Coal Mine. During the off season, he worked on oilrigs and in construction. With the closure of the mines in the  valley, he worked as an electrician for many years at Hector’s Pipe and Steel in Calgary. He was  then employed at the Drumheller Federal Penitentiary until he retired. In his retirement, his hobbies included puttering around the house and garage, playing cribbage, gardening, astronomy and of course, reading. He loved to debate current affair issues using television  newscast as his opponent. He was always the self-declared winner!   His idioms on life included favorite sayings such as, “Better the dime in my pocket than theirs” as his frugality was legendary, “I can fix or rebuild it” and “I can do this without directions.” He could have authored a book on 1001 ways to use duct tape! He will be remembered by his family as the poster child for Coca-Cola and Saybon toffee consumption.  He was very proud of all his grandchildren, Brent, Chris Wakaruk, Theresa, Laurel, Seamus, Sean  Murphy and Erin, Tyler Gerodo. He later welcomed four great-grandchildren- Emily, Katie Wakaruk and  Pearce, Kira Murphy.  He will be missed. A celebration of George’s life will follow at a later date.

MORROW, Donna Frances
May 13, 1936 – July 10, 2013

It is with great heartache that the family announces the passing of our beloved Wife, Mom, Grandma, and Great Grandma, Donna Frances Morrow (nee: Campbell), on Wednesday, July 10, 2013, in Drumheller, Alberta, at the age of 77. Donna was born on Wednesday, May 13, 1936, in Calgary, Alberta. She resided there until her mom’s untimely passing in 1948, upon which she moved to Michichi to live with her grandparents. Attending school there, she dreamed of continuing on with her education in Secretarial School, but fate had different plans. Michichi is where Donna met a handsome young man, and the Love of her Life, Kenneth James Morrow. After a brief courtship, the two lovebirds were married on October 24, 1953. The couple lived all around Michichi until 1965, when they moved to their Forever Home, the family affectionately calls “The Farm”. This is where Donna lived the rest of her days, raising her kids, gardening, and helping Ken out with the cattle and farming.  Although being a mom of four kept her on her toes, she still managed to devote time to the United Church, Community Association, and the Home and School Association. Donna was also a loyal member of the Royal Canadian Legion for 21 years, serving on many levels of the Executive. She was a most important part of the Famous “Legion Fish Night”, as she is the holder of the Secret Batter Recipe! Mom was a very competitive curler, and loved to go to bonspiels all over the country. Although she always wanted to win, what she enjoyed most was the socializing and meeting new friends wherever she went. In her later years, if there was a curling game on, you could bet Grandma would be watching it no matter what! Donna adored nothing more than being with her ever growing family, whether it be gathering around her, as she played her organ, having sing-a-longs, or just sitting around the table having a delicious meal, having great chats and laughs. Grandma will be remembered for her selfless ways, one-of-a-kind smile, and her love for family and friends. Donna is survived by Ken, her loving husband of 59 years, her four children, Clifford Morrow, Patricia (Dennis) Burrows, Gregory Morrow, and Melanie Thom, her 8 grandchildren, Michelle (Eric) Jensen, Stacey (Joe) Dyck, Trevor (Danielle) Burrows, Crystal (Shane) Tyson, Ryan (Mindy) Morrow, Kurtis (Amanda) Morrow, Kalie Thom and Rhean Thom, and her 14 great grandchildren. Also mourning are her brothers, Bob (Murdeanne) Mazury, John (Dorothy) Mazury, and her sister, June (Dave) Scott, and one sister-in-law, Ada Morrow. She was predeceased by her mother, Eileen, her father, John Mazury, stepmother, Hazel Mazury, special Auntie June Todd, and brother-in-law, Don Morrow. A celebration of Donna’s life was held at the Badlands Community Facility on Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. with Harold Hunter officiating. Pallbearers were Trevor Burrows, Ryan Morrow, Kurtis Morrow, Shane Tyson, Michelle Jensen and Kalie Thom, with Honarary Pallbearers being Crystal Tyson, Stacey Dyck, Rhean Thom, and all of her great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: The Canadian Diabetes Foundation Calgary and District Branch: 204-2323 32 Ave NE Calgary, Alberta T2E 6Z3. (403 )823-0160. Hanna Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements. 403-854-4988.
