BENNETT, Joyce Lillian (nee Goodfellow)

January 29, 1920 - December 24, 2014

Joyce Bennett passed away peacefully at Sarcee Carewest Long Term Care facility on December 24, 2014 at the age of 94 years.  Joyce, beloved daughter of the late William and Matilda Goodfellow (nee Breiman), was born in Kinistino, Saskatchewan, a middle child in a family of six sisters and two brothers. In this small farming community her dad ran the Kinistino Livery Stable and her mother was a custom seamstress. As a young girl, Joyce was considered the tomboy of the bunch, often excelling above the boys.  She started off her working career as a qualified hair dresser. Later, when married to Forest (Benny) Bennett, Joyce was a long time employee of Smithbilt Hats in Calgary, maker of the world famous Calgary White Hats.  Until recent years, Joyce was an active 45 year member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion No. 1 Calgary Branch. The Legion played a very important part of Joyce’s social life, where she met up with her sisters for coffee in the afternoons and enjoyed many evening dances.  Joyce is survived by her very close and loving sister, Pearl Hoolihan, nieces Sherry Churi, Pearl David, Anne Campbell & Cindy Judd, and nephews Jim Horner, Fred Horner, Frank Ford, Lee Goodfellow, Larry Goodfellow and their families.  Joyce was predeceased by her husband Benny, her sisters Florence Anderson, Ruby Redmond, Mildred Campbell & Yvonne Caskey and brothers Bill Goodfellow & Fred Goodfellow. Joyce’s funeral service will be held at Foster’s Garden Chapel, 3220 – 4 Street N.W. Calgary, 10:00 am Saturday, January 10, 2015.  The family thanks Dr. Wheeler, the nurses and staff of Unit No. 1 of Sarcee Carewest for their compassionate care, together with Ginny, Lynn, Gisele, Amy, Hilda and Lorna, caregivers, for their warmth and kindness during their many visits with Joyce.  Heartfelt appreciation to Deanna, Michael & Dixie at Care to Share for delivering a great program of caring for the needs of the elderly. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family via the website www.fostersgardenchapel.ca.

GUTWALD, Patricia Anne

March 1, 1939 - December 23, 2014

Patricia Anne Gutwald, loving wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on December 23, 2014.  Pat, born Agnes Patricia Anne Fraser, was raised in the Strathcona area of Edmonton, Alberta.  She was attending St. Mary’s High School when she met the love of her life, Ralph Gutwald.  They were married in 1958 and have remained together ever since, recently celebrating 56 years of marriage.  In 1963, they moved to Drumheller as they felt it was a good community to raise their growing family.  They made this place their home and continued to live there until her passing.  She is now reunited with her two children, Mark and Alyson, her parents, Helen and Ralph Fraser, and siblings, Jack and Shirley, who had predeceased her and were in God’s loving care. Pat loved to entertain and was renowned for her great parties, amazing cooking, and outstanding hospitality.  She was also an adventurous soul.  She and Ralph travelled to many parts of the world where they enjoyed exploring new cultures and mingling with the people.  Pat was an artist and had an innate ability to visualize the possibilities, whether this creativity was expressed through her paintings, her interior decorating and design, or her gardening, which was her passion.  She spent many hours lovingly tending her flowers and shrubs for the benefit of all to admire.  Pat was inspiring.  She was a woman of strong morals and convictions.  She had boundless energy.  She was happiest when she was being productive and moving towards some goal she had set for herself.  When she made up her mind to do something, there was little that stopped her from achieving it.  This commitment and work ethic was evident in the career path she took.  She began working full-time at the Drumheller Penitentiary when her youngest child began school.  Not content to stay in a secretarial role, she commuted back and forth to Calgary to attend University while continuing to work.  She obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology and after being promoted to successively higher administrative and managerial positions at the Drumheller Penitentiary, Pat’s professionalism, dedication, and competence was rewarded by an appointment to the National Parole Board in 1996.  She remained in this prestigious position until her retirement.  Following her retirement, Pat continued to live an active and fulfilling life.  However, during this period of her life, she also experienced some major life challenges, namely the tragic and sudden deaths of two children, Alyson and Mark, as well as some health concerns.  Similar to how she has always lived her life, she faced these tragedies and life challenges with strength, courage, dignity, and grace.  Pat leaves behind her devoted and loving husband, Ralph.  In addition to her husband, Pat is survived by her children Craig (Judy) Gutwald, Catherine (Pat) Bonneville, Shelley (Dale) Bergman, Licia (Steve) Pickup, daughter-in-law Dixie Gutwald, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren including Stephen, Tyler, Danielle (Jesse) and Parker, Candice (Jake) and Mason, Rachel, Tim, Matthew (Eve), Liam and Lucas, Joel (Monica), Colin (Lauren), Meghan (Tristan), Alyssa (Joel), Brenon (Nikkie), Liam and Jaime, and Juleya (Brett) and Liliana.  Pat will live forever in the hearts and memories of her family and friends.  We draw some comfort knowing she is once again with her children and family in heaven and treasure the special memories of the wonderful times we spent with her.  A private family service is being held in her memory.  The family wishes to extend their thanks and gratitude to everyone for their kind words of caring and support during this very difficult time.  In remembrance of Pat and in lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, 1331 29 Street NW, Calgary, AB, T2N 4N2.

HERMAN, Donald Arthur

December 29, 1931 - January 19, 2015

Donald Arthur Herman, born December 29, 1931, died January 19, 2015 at the age of 83, after a brave but painful struggle with his family at his side.  He is survived by his wife Joan, children Deborah, Shelley, Douglas & Tracey, Kim & Tony, grandsons Matthew, Justin, Dale & Shaun, his brother Albert & Anne, niece Sharon & nephew Charles & Karen.  He is predeceased by his sister Evelyn Grace. Don grew up on a farm north of Michichi, learning his avid gardening skills and riding a horse to school.  Don then stayed at the dorm and attended Drumheller High School, later attending Tech (SAIT) and excelled in welding and mechanics. He worked with his parents and brother at the Michichi  farm for awhile, but when he tired of feeding cows in the winter he went to work on the rigs, in the Munson & Fish Lake areas. He then trucked for Ed Goette, hauling through rural Alberta. On May 8, 1956 he married Joan and started farming in the Over The Hill (Churchill) district until he retired and they moved to Drumheller in November 1996. In his early years at Churchill, Don worked winters at the Atlas Coal Mine running the diesel train engine that hauled the coal cars across the top to the tipple. Don was involved in the Over The Hill community association and drove school bus for 24 years, retiring in 1985, getting to know the neighbors as friends. Don was an avid skier from a young age, then teaching his kids and many others to ski. He first had a ski hill in his coulee, then he worked with the Drumheller Valley Ski Club and was involved with the hills at both Dunphy and the more recent hill in Drumheller. Don was on the board of the Heart to Heart Society. He also had season tickets to the Drumheller Dragons since their inception and enjoyed watching hockey in the valley since the days of the Drumheller Miners. Don was known for tinkering, fixing, and building from when he was young, and never finished until a job was done right. From the time he had a family, that was his greatest joy and concern. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Badlands Community Facility on Friday, January 23 at 2:00 p.m.  Donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

Maude is survived by sons Stan (Lorelee), Kingsley (Shirley) and Paul (Brenda) and daughter Alicia (Bob Hannah). Grandchildren Jodi, Kelly, Kim (Ian Johnson), Jayson, Julia (Dirk), Desmond (Tammy), Derek (Amanda), Michael Hannah (Hannah) and Sherry (Darren Meyer). Also dozens of nieces and nephews. Mom was born near Handhill Lake on the family farm. She attended rural schools in the area and later ran the Dorm in Hanna. She married Michael Marshall November 24, 1943. They had three sons and a daughter, eleven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. They lived in Delia as newlyweds and later moved to the farm where they stayed for over fifty years. They moved back to Delia in a new home on their original lot. In 2006 they moved to the Sunshine Lodge in Drum where Dad passed in November 2007. Mom enjoyed her new home and many friends there. Mike and Maude are as recognized a duo as Ralph and Alice Kramden, Fred and Wilma Flinstone or George and Weezie Jefferson and nearly as comical. They were social butterflies and enjoyed visiting and entertaining.  In 1984 they were honored to receive Holy Communion from Pope John Paul II in Edmonton. They were very involved in the community and always willing to help out. Their home at the farm was a gathering point for family and friends. When they moved to town the tradition continued and seldom had a day pass that they did not have company. Mom with help from Aunt Mary ran the Coffee Shop while Luke went to China and developed a special friendship with Mai and Luke and their Family. Mom was the news correspondent to the local papers for years but was most in her element as the organizer for the many trips they enjoyed, I bet she’s looking for Lawrence Ludwig right now up yonder trying to get something lined up. We called Mom our Favorite Bad Example as she ate what she wanted when she wanted it, refused to take an extra step lest it could be viewed as exercise and still remained quite healthy. Funeral was held at 11:00 AM St Anthony’s Catholic Church in Drumheller on Friday, January 16 and Prayers were held the evening before at 7:00 P.M. The Family of Maude Marshall wishes to thank Father Ian Gagne for saying prayers and Mass for Mom. We want to thank the parishioners from St. Anthony’s who have services and take Communion to the Lodge. Many thanks for the flowers and Mass Cards and food. HARPER, Dave

2015

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dave Harper. Dave suddenly passed away while at his winter residence in Yuma, Arizona, with Rose, his loving wife of sixty one years, at his side.  Dave will be deeply missed by all. Friends and family will cherish memories of Dave’s strong will and personality. At a young age, Dave joined his father in the tire industry. With a great business spirit, Dave was happy and proud to assist each and  every customer. Dave treated everyone he met through the  business like they were his friend and family member. In 1962 Dave became a founding member of the Western Canada Tire Dealers Association and worked very hard to make the tire industry what it is today. With a passion for his beliefs and a will to succeed, Dave was able to build a strong foundation for Harper’s Tire and those building blocks continue to make the business the success it is today. From a small, little shop in the downtown district of Drumheller to our current location, Dave was proud all the way. Dave believed in community volunteer work and was a proud and active member of Drumheller Lions Club for over fifty years. He enjoyed the times spent as a child at Little Fish Lake. These times continued as Dave became a father, grandfather and great grandfather. Working in his greenhouse tending to crops with scientific precision was another of Dave’s passions. Winter months found Dave and Rose spending time in Arizona with friends as part of the Winnebago RV group. Dave is survived by his wife, Rose, children Andrew (Brenda), Jan, Cheryl (Joe), grandchildren Michelle, Jordan (Melissa), Kyle, Taylor, and great grandchildren Dylan, Colby, Tate and Alison. Dave will be sadly missed by all his family. A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Dave’s name may be made to the charity of your choice.
