STAUFFER, Clarence Arthur

November 22, 1936 - February 08, 2015

Clarence Stauffer was born in Didsbury to Ira and Dora Stauffer.  After a courageous battle with cancer he passed away peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by loved ones, and is now singing in Heaven. Clarence attended Mountain View Bible College in Didsbury, AB for 2 years.  Following school he married Wilda Siemens in May, 1957.  To this union were 3 children; Sharrie, Janice and Terry.  Clarence attained his masters in electrical in 1970.  In 1969 he opened his own electrical contracting company; RD Electric in Drumheller, AB where they lived for 35 years. Clarence and Wilda retired in Invermere, BC in 2001 where they currently reside. Clarence spent his retirement years enriching other’s lives through his many talents and gifts.  He did electrical throughout  the valley and on numerous mission trips including Brazil and Mexico.  Clarence loved to sing and was involved in several choirs including Youth Choirs, and many community choirs.  He also lead worship for years in Drumheller and continued singing on the worship teams in his home church in Invermere.  He had been singing in Invermere’s community choir right up until a month and a half ago even while battling lung cancer.  From early childhood to his final day, Clarence was always bringing a smile to those around him with his bright and witty sense of humor. Clarence is survived by his wife, Wilda, his 3 children, Sharrie (Wayne) Jones, Janice (Dennis) Scriba and Terry (Teresa) Stauffer, 6 grandchildren, Jodi, Chris, Chelsey, David, Kurtis and Janika, and 5 great grandchildren.  He is also survived by his older sister Dorthy (Don) Suder and their 3 children, and his younger brother Wayne (Evelyn) Stauffer and their 3 children. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, February 16th at Lake Windermere Alliance Church in Invermere, BC.  In lieu of flowers please contribute to Sunshine Children’s Center in Invermere or a charity of your choice. 

FAUBION, William Raymond

Ray passed peacefully into his Lord’s arms on Monday, February 9, 2015 at the Drumheller Hospital at the age of 83. Ray spent 80 years in the Dorothy area and the last three in Nacmine. Left to cherish his memory is the love of his life, Betty, his wife of 60 years, and their family. Children: Phil (Dawn) Faubion, Pat (Greg) Gall, Barb (Ian) Proudfoot, Brenda George, Jim (Kari-Ann) Faubion. Grandchildren: Jenn (Greg), Michelle, Marc; Anna (Steve), John (Andrea), Peter (Mel); Evan, Ben (Carrie); Justin, Shaelynn; Bailey (Jon), Joseph, Nathaniel. Great Grandchildren: Tessa; Mercy, James; Raglan, Aubrey, Jayleigh; Kaiden, Ezekiel, Geneva, Janessa, Jedidiah. Ray also leaves behind a sister, Mary King and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Mr. Terence (Terry) Scattergood passed away in Drumheller, Alberta on February 8, 2015 with his family by his side. DEKEYSER, Marie

August 29, 1922 - February 13, 2015

Marie Emily Louise Dekeyser (nee Dogterom) of Lethbridge, passed away on February 13, 2015 at the age of 92 years. Thanks to all the staff at Good Samaritan Society Park Meadows Village and VON.  Also thanks go to Dr. Coma and Terry from Quality Care. Marie was born August 29, 1922 in Lethbridge to Jacob and Emily (Charest) Dogterom.  She received her education at McLean School, White School, Calgary Normal School and summer school at the University of Alberta.  Marie started her teaching career in 1954 in a one room school house.  Schools she taught at included Keho Lake, Picture Butte, Coaldale, Fort Macleod and Drumheller, where she taught Home Economics.  Marie enjoyed art, sewing, bowling and ice skating.  She volunteered for Meals on Wheels, Blankets for Canada and knit hats for hospital newborns.  In 1956 Marie married Robert Dekeyser and soon became parents to Sharon and Grant.  She moved to Lethbridge in 1995 where she spent her remaining years.  Marie is survived by her daughter Sharon (Don) Wolf and son Grant (Corey). Grandchildren include Celina (Chris) Campbell, Lisa, Netania and Jules; and great grandchild  Claire Campbell.  Siblings include Muriel Zasadny and Jake Dogterom, sister in-law Fran Dogterom, numerous nieces, nephews and their families from both the Dogterom and Dekeyser sides, and life-long friends. Marie is predeceased by her former husband Robert Dekeyser, siblings Hendrik, Raymond, Louis, Francis, and Dogterom in-laws Irene, Alex, Grace, Irma and Dekeyser in-laws Fritz, Helen, Albert, Marcella and August.  A Memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, February 20, 2015 at MARTIN BROTHERS, (610 – 4 Street South, Lethbridge)  In lieu of flowers, those who wish to donate may do so to: Canadian Cancer Society, Arthritis Society of Alberta, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, The Canadian Diabetes Association or The Parkinson Society of Southern Alberta. SEEGER, Raymond

October 4, 1934 - February 9, 2015

Raymond Seeger and brother Ronald were born October 4, 1934 on the Lachman farm outside Alsask.  They were the youngest children of Edna and Wesley Seeger, following siblings Keith and Marjorie. He became a heavy-duty mechanic for Finning tractor in Calgary where he married Lorraine and they had three children, Wesley, Sherri and Steve.  When the children were older, Ray was transferred to Nelson, BC.  He remarried to Elaine and Jeff was born shortly after.  Some time later he changed careers and began driving logging truck out of Kaslo, BC.  After retiring he relocated back to Alberta, settling in Delia to live closer to his twin brother.  Here he lived out his later years happily assisting local farmers and house sitting; gardening and tinkering; fishing and hunting, and sitting among the disciples of Luke’s morning coffee meetings.  Ray Seeger died in his Delia home on February 9, 2015.  A Celebration of Life was held at the Delia Community Center on February 16.  He is survived by his brother Ron (Norma); children Wesley, Sherri and Jeff; Grandson Cillian; and nieces and nephews. ZACHARIASSEN, Richard Donald

January 15, 1958, Calgary, AB - February 8, 2015, Rosebud, AB

Richard Donald Zachariassen, beloved husband of Helen Zachariassen, passed away suddenly at the family farm near Rosebud. Richard (Rick) was born in Calgary, the third of five children of Raymond and Phyllis Zachariassen. Growing up on the farm was a joy for Rick – everything was interesting and exciting, especially if an engine was attached. Rick often helped his Dad and Herman Hansen, the family’s hired man; asking questions, taking machinery apart and learning how to put it back together. Rick’s formal learning started in Grade one at Severn Creek School in Rosebud. When the Rosebud school closed, Rick continued his education at the school in Standard. After graduating from High School, Rick worked in Calgary for a period but the farm life drew him back. Rick took the Farm and Ranch Management course at Olds College and, after graduation, moved back to Rosebud to farm with his Mom and Dad. Rick and Helen were married July 7, 1995 and moved into the house they designed and built together. Farming, of course, is not a nine to five job. Despite the long, busy days of working on the farm, Rick found time for fun. Fun for Rick was building new equipment, retro-fitting old equipment, and anything that involved sawing, drilling, welding, nailing, cutting and soldering. Rick made time for important community commitments: Rosebud seed plant, the Hall board, and the Lions Club. He was also one of the few who contributed over one hundred donations to Canadian Blood Services. Very important to Rick was his dedication to the volunteer fire departments in both Rockyford and Rosebud. Rick trained hard and worked hard. Everyone will agree that his commitment was an integral part of the new fire hall in Rosebud. Rick’s death has devastated his family, friends, neighbors and colleagues. Mourning his death and treasuring his memory are his wife Helen, his siblings Donna, Roy (Karen), Judy (John), Linda (Andy) and Helen’s family. Rick also leaves behind his beloved uncle and aunt, Wayne & Iris Dresser, of Carbon; his cousins and their children and grandchildren. Rick leaves to mourn his cherished nieces and nephews: Kayla and Courtney Zachariassen and their mother Laurie Zorniak; Matt McKee; Liam, Sara and Daniel Wong. VALENTINI, Ernie

October 5, 1942 - February 21, 2015

Ernie Valentini of Drumheller, beloved husband of Lorraine Valentini and beloved husband of the late Jeannette Valentini, passed away on February 21, 2015 at the age of 72 years. Ernie was born on October 5, 1942 to parents Marcello and Marie Valentini. He went to school at the Redcliff School. Ernie worked in the Correctional Service for 31 years and for the town of Drumheller for 7 years. Ernie’s hobbies were: upholstery, riding horses /motorcycles and driving cows. His interests included watching TV and Star Trek. Ernie was a Woman’s Self Defense teacher, a RIOT team leader and taught Saskatoon RCMP courses.
Ernie is survived by his two daughters Debbie Torok and Teresa Valentini; one son Ernie Valentini; grandchildren: Chayce, Cayley, Steven, Kristy, Melissa, Austin and Paige; one sister Lucille Johnson; and a brother Malvin Valentini. Ernie was predeceased by his parents Marcello and Marie Valentini. GIBSON, Lawrence William (Larry)

March 28, 1945 - February 16, 2015

It is with profound sadness and deep loss that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved partner, father, brother, uncle, cousin and friend on Monday February 16, 2015.  Larry is survived by his soul mate and best friend Betty Challand, son Corey, sisters Marilyn Hay and Pat Stevenson (Tom), brothers Bill (Sheila) and Jim (Wendy), aunt Doris Irving and his numerous cousins, nephews, nieces, great nephews, great nieces and extended family.  He was predeceased by his mother Edna, father Bill and brother Allen. Larry was born and raised in the district of Carbon Alberta.  At the young age of nineteen he was named the World Wheat King at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto.  Following attending the University of Calgary he recognized his life’s ambition and returned home to farm with his father and brothers.  Larry will be remembered and cherished for his gentle and generous nature, benevolence, honesty and sense of community.  He greatly appreciated life and the world around him and he was a lifelong learner and a patient teacher.  He always respected the views and opinions of others, often times putting his own ambitions second.  He had a wonderful and gentle sense of humor and was never afraid to laugh at himself first.  Larry was an ardent curler and enjoyed many years competing with his family, neighbors and friends. He was also our resident family historian and his entertaining stories with detailed descriptions, punctuated with the occasional personal comment will be greatly missed. Larry will be most remembered for his passion for farming and sustainable agriculture, a passion that was only surpassed by his love for his family. Caswell, John Sylvanus

July 3, 1925 - February 16, 2015

John Caswell was born July 3, 1925 in Drumheller, Alberta and passed away peacefully February 16, 2015 at Drumheller Long Term Care Facility. He was the only son of Sylvanus Caswell and Sarah Caswell (nee Bynersly). He was predeceased by his wife Myrtle Jane (Susie) (nee Murphy); his sister Elizabeth (Betty) Hickey-Verbonac. He will never be forgotten by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchild - Edward (Jacqueline, and sons Joshua and Brandon), Margaret (David, and daughter Sarah); Michael (Celia and children Angela, (Christopher) Gregory, Joy-Anne (Joshua and their son Ethan) and is survived by many nieces and nephews. John dedicated his entire life to the Caswell family homestead north of Drumheller.  He will be remembered for his love of animals especially horses, cowboy stories and friendly demeanor to all. His happiest times were spent on trail rides, volunteering for 4-H and teaching others how to ride and care for horses. Being named Drumheller Exhibition and Stampede Cowboy of the Year in 1987 was an honour he appreciated. Many thanks to the staff at the Drumheller Hospital and Long Term Care Facility for the care provided to our Dad over the many years he was there. MANTIE, Shirley

May 22, 1928 - February 17, 2015

Shirley Mantie passed away on Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at the age of 86 years. Shirley is lovingly remembered by 7 children, Wayne, Maxine, Don, Gary, Judy, Marilyn and Bobby; 10 grandchildren  and 8 great grandchildren. She is predeceased by husband, Wilbert in 1986; son, Dwight; and sisters, Patsy, Margret and Josephine. Born in Drumheller, she lived in East Coulee until 1962, when mines closed down. Shirley moved to the Canmore/Exshaw area until 1986 when husband Wilbert passed. She spent the last part of her life in Calgary. Many thanks to the care staff at Chinook Care Center. CODE, John Finlay

April 16, 1919 - February 17, 2015

John Finlay Code passed away peacefully, with family at his side, in the Foothills Country Hospice at the age of 95. Finlay (Fin) was born in Red Deer to J. B. and Flora, and spent early years at New Brigden and Red Deer, with sister Betty and brother Duncan, until 1928 when the family moved to Carbon . Finlay received schooling in Carbon and Garrett, then began supporting his family by working for area farmers in Carbon and Hesketh. Dad remembered earning 50 cents/day shovelling wheat for Garrett’s threshing crew. When World War II began, Finlay was working for Merle Anderson.  In July of 1940 he decided to join the Armed Forces, training in Calgary and Camp Borden, Ontario until he embarked in Nov. 1941. Finlay landed on French soil on D- day, advancing through Belgium, Holland and Germany. In later years, a cherished possession was the medallion awarded him by the Dutch government. Finlay was discharged Oct. 1945. After a short stint at the Atlas mine, he worked in Calgary and then Carbon where he and Duncan began business together: trucking, selling Cockshutt machinery, and farming. 1952 presented an opportunity to buy  Bob Levin’s place from Dick Garrett. Duncan farmed while Dad worked at P&H in Dunphy, then  General Supplies in Calgary. He met Shirley Anderson while square dancing and they were married in 1954.  They moved to the farm in 1959, bringing Barbara and Lynne. Sons David and Laurie were born in the early 60’s. Finlay spent 33 years on the farm, before retiring to Crossfield. On the farm he was jack of all trades, using past experiences to persevere.  He was a member of numerous organizations and served on many boards, including Drumheller Hospital Board and Drumheller Health Unit Board. In retirement he maintained  Masonic and Legion membership. Finlay and Shirley celebrated their 60th anniversary in April 2014, before Mom’s passing in May.  He is survived by daughters Barbara and Lynne Code (Barry Sawada), sons David (Linda) and Laurie (Elaine) and grandchildren Jordan and Justan Sawada, and Micayla and Jillian Code. He is also survived by sisters- in -law Gwen Code and Thelma Meyer, and extended family.  The family is grateful to staff at South Health Campus and, especially,  Foothills Country Hospice, Okotoks  for the compassionate care provided to Dad. McLEOD, Amelia Martha

May 25, 1915 - February 13, 2015

Amelia McLeod known to her friends as Millie, to her five children as mom, and to her grandchildren and great grandchildren as Grandma and Great Grandma; passed away peacefully with family holding her hands, where she appeared content and knew it was her time to be with God. Millie , just three months short of being a Centenarian (as she would have been 100 on May 25, 2015) has seen more than most of us would imagine- from oxcarts and natives circling their tent home, horse and plough, to today’s computer world and space program.  Millie was a fantastic cook and loved sharing her meals with family and friends. She was well known for her roast chicken, angel food cakes from scratch and her fresh bread and buns. She was predeceased by her husband Neil of 50 years in 1988, her parents Ludwig and Michaelena, nine sisters and one brother plus a grandson, Scott.  She is survived by her two sisters Frances(Charlie), Helen and one brother Clarence, her children Doreen(Pius), Barry(Jan), Ron(Sandy), Sam(Sue), Shelley(Roger), twelve grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and literally hundreds of nieces and nephews as she is a descendant of good Polish Catholic heritage (Samoleski). Raised in southern Saskatchewan, Millie and her husband Neil left the comfortable community of Claydon Saskatchewan in 1954, for a new start in the Delia area to accommodate the further education of their four children which was followed by the addition of Shelley in 1956.  As a couple they were active in the community and their favourite pastimes were dancing and playing cards. After Neil’s passing, Millie carried on as a widow with involvement in the church, 4-H, and seniors drop in centre of which they were both founding members.  Millie would frequently be spotted in the garden with her special cap on as gardening was an enjoyable pastime for her. Because of her almost 100 years; she was also predeceased by most of her friends and will be sadly missed by those remaining friends and family.  In memory of Millie’s life, donations may be made to the Delia and District Seniors Drop In Centre, Box 151 Delia Alberta, T0J 0W0.  The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at the Long Term Care in Hanna for their wonderful care of Millie. Samay, Anne (nee Gombos)

June 18, 1924 in Czech Republic - February 18, 2015 in Drumheller, Alberta

Anne immigrated to Canada from the Czech Republic at the age of fourteen with her mother Anna and brother Michael to join their father making East Coulee their new home where her father worked in the coal mines. She met Frank Samay while working as a nanny in Shaughnessy, AB. They married on October 26, 1946. Throughout their married life, they lived in Shaughnessy, East Coulee, Saskatoon and then back to Drumheller in their retirement years. Anne passed away in Continuing Care at the Drumheller Hospital with her daughters Marge and Lynn and granddaughter Janet by her side. Anne is survived by her daughter Marjorie (Clayton) Schrock, son Larry (Kathy) Samay, and Lynn Sonstelie (Doug Howdle) and nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Anne was predeceased by her parents George and Anne Gombos, her brother Michael and her beloved husband Frank. Andreas James Roes of Dorothy, beloved husband of Sheena Roes, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2015 at the age of 70 years. CASTONGUAY, Edmond

May 12, 1938 - February 28, 2015

It is with great sadness and very heavy hearts that our family announces the passing of our dear dad, grandpa and great grandpa, Edmond. He passed away unexpectedly on Saturday morning, Feb 28th at the Peter Lougheed Hospital.  Dad was born May 12, 1938 in Rosetown, Sask. He grew up in Rosetown on the family farm with his parents and 3 sisters. Ed is survived by his son Joe (Shawna) and daughters, Corrine, Bonnee (Murray) and Sandra (Marty). The loves of his life were his grandchildren: Ron, Ryan, Shaun Collett, Nicole (Tyler), Lindsey and Brendan Shanks, Mitch and Jared Weymark, Cort and Rhylan Castonguay. He was blessed to have 2 great grandsons, Jayden and Noah Matthews. Dad is also survived by 2 sisters, Marie (Peter) and Lucy (Tom) as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Dad will be dearly missed by his special friend Lena Kuntz. Welcoming dad to heaven with open arms is our beloved mom, Norma who we lost in 2006.  Dad grew up on the family farm outside of Rosetown. Due to health issues he was not able to continue farming after his father passed away. His career path took him not too far from the farming industry as he was employed by Federated Co-op in the Agro department. This brought him and mom to Drumheller with 3 small daughters. Their family was complete when their son Joseph arrived. They lived in Drumheller and raised their family where dad curled, had a position on the Catholic School Board, was very active in the Knights of Columbus and K40. Dad retired in 1986. He and mom spent many winters together in Arizona where they made many more friends enjoying retirement to the fullest. He loved to spend many hours watching his grandsons play hockey and baseball. He was their biggest fan!! He also loved to watch Rhylan perform in music festival and sing in various events.  He had a soft, kind heart and a big smile. He was a quiet man who knew what was important - family was the most important part of dad’s life. Anyone who knew dad knew that about him. We will miss him but take comfort in knowing he is with mom.  Prayers will be held Thursday, March 5 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. PECKHAM, Reginald (Reg) Max

July 25, 1960 – Feb 21, 2015

Reg Passed away peacefully at his home in Calgary. Left to cherish his memory is the love of his life and soulmate, Heather, his mother Lura of High River AB, his brothers Kent of Penticton BC, Greg and wife Melinda of High River AB, Guy and wife Mandy of Vancouver BC, as well as his stepchildren, his nieces and nephews and their families, his grandson, and his friends. Reg was career driven and dedicated.  At a very early age Reg established a career in oil and gas becoming one of the youngest drilling consultants.  Reg then spent the latter part of his career working as a Drilling Superintendent downtown Calgary. Reg had a huge personality and made an impact with everyone he met.   He had a love for life and lived every day to its fullest. Reg was passionate about his career, riding his Harley with friends, NASCAR, camping, and traveling.  Reg’s biggest pleasure in life was spending time with his girl at their holiday home in St. Lucia. HOY, Ellen

1918 - 2015

With sadness we announce the death of our dear mother, Ellen. Alice Ellen Murdoch was born 31 March 1918 at the Dack farm near Michichi. She was the daughter of Alice Dack and Walter Murdoch and grew up with her sisters, Betty and Marj, midst a flurry of activity, in the town of Michichi.  As Smoky, she pitched for the Morrin Flyers who won the Provincial Title in 1933. She married her childhood sweetheart, Bob Hoy in 1937.  During the first years of their marriage they lived in several different places, but in 1948 they bought the Bill Smeal farm in the Michichi district and settled there.  They worked hard and participated happily in all the community activities until they retired in the 1970s. It was then they moved to Drumheller and enjoyed many years in the Valley. When Bob died in 1994 Ellen continued to live in Drumheller. She was a devoted parent and leaves a large family to celebrate her life. Her children: Bobbie (Ted Belke), Bert (Margaret Urch) and Pat (Ralph Thompson), 16 grandchildren, 53 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren, will all miss her counsel, her great spirit and her sense of humor. Her family would like to thank the staff at Drumheller Continuing Care for their cheerful, willing and competent care and many kindnesses. Interment took place at Mountain view Cemetery on 4 March 2015 with her family in attendance. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 10 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at the Knox United Church, Drumheller. In lieu of flowers a donation to a charity of your choice or an Act of Random Kindness in her honour would be appreciated. Courtney-Winters Funeral Home entrusted with arrangements.

DOBSON, Clifford L

September 13 ~ February 26, 2015

It is with great sadness and loss that we announce the passing of our dear and beloved Brother and Uncle, Clifford Dobson on February 26, 2015 at the age of 88 years. Clifford was born in Drumheller on September 13, 1926.  He took all his schooling here.  He was employed by the CNR Express and later transferred to their Calgary Office.  When he retired he made Drumheller his home.  Clifford enjoyed hockey and was active in the Minor Hockey Program, receiving recognition for that as well.  During his retirement, he was very active with the Drumheller Salvation army helping in many ways.  Clifford was predeceased by his parents, William and Harriet Dobson, sister Jessie, sister Grace and brother-in-law Tom.  He is survived by his loving sister, Florence, nephew Dwight, niece Karen.  Clifford was a wonderful brother and uncle and will be greatly missed. Funeral services for Clifford will be held on Wednesday March 4, 2015 at 1:00 P.M. from the Drumheller Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Glenn Reeder officiating.  If so desired donations may be made in memory of Clifford may be made to the Drumheller Salvation Army, P.O  Box 3097 Drumheller, AB T0J 0Y0, Drumheller Church of The Nazarene Box 2760, Drumheller, AB T0J 0Y0 or to Drumheller Area Health Foundation 351-9TH Street NW, Drumheller, AB T0J 0Y1 (Continuing Care).  Courtney-Winter’s Funeral Homes are in care of the arrangements. ROES, Andreas James

October 6, 1944 - February 28, 2015

Andy Roes, beloved husband of Sheena Roes passed away peacefully at 70 years old. Born in Drumheller October 6, 1944. Andy lived in Dorothy and went to the Dorothy school from 1950 - 1959. Andy attended grade 10-11 at Lindsay Thurber in Red Deer and grade 12 at Western Canada in Calgary. Andy was always involved with farming. He spent time working on the oil rigs before focusing solely on farming near the Homestead Coulee in 1970, establishing Roes Brothers with his brother Frank. Andy started his own farm and homestead in 1977. You could always find Andy connecting with family members on the phone or on the computer. Andy loved to travel, and had a particular fondness for his many trips to Germany to visit and connect with family members. Andy enjoyed a great conversation regardless of who they were or how long he had known them. Besides his loving wife Sheena, Andy is survived by his four daughters; Marissa, Stacey (Bill), Sharlie (Andrew), Jenny; and son Daniel (Melissa). He is also survived by his nine grandchildren; Jaden, Brody, Gabrielle, Matthew, Roman, Warren, Everleigh, Kiana, and Harlow. He is also survived by his brother Frank (Pat), sister Betty (Jim), and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded by his son Christian, parents Christian and Alice, and brother John. A Celebration of the life of Andreas (Andy), James Roes was held at the Homestead Coulee Community Centre on March 7 from 2:00 -  5:00 p.m. If desired, a donation can be made to the Alberta Children’s Hospital, 2888 Shaganappi Trail NW, Calgary, AB, T3B 6A8 in lieu of flowers.
